This set of “Special Interest Plates” as they are known by the DMV, also called Personalized or Vanity Plates to the rest of us can be registered to any year car or trucks in California regardless of the year, make or model. Per DMV here are the guidelines.  The plates do not need to be expired more than three years but it is easier if they are.  If nopt the vehicle they were originally assigned to vehicle ID number (VIN) has to be reassigned to another set of plates automatically making yours DMV clear.  If expired more than three years mere possession of the plates makes them yours and available for reassignment.

You must have a matching set that are in acceptable condition. (Not mangled or rusted beyond all the numbers being easily legible.)

Bring those plates to the DMV for inspection so they can confirm they are authentic DMV issued plates.
